The Difference Between a Focus and a Resolution

A resolution is a decision made once, usually in a burst of enthusiasm, about who you are going to become.

A focus is narrower. It is one area of attention, chosen for a specific stretch of time, that gets more of your energy while it is in effect.

Resolutions tend to be sweeping. Get healthy. Be more productive. Finally get organized. These are not really goals so much as versions of yourself you are hoping to step into all at once. That is a lot to ask of a decision made on January 1.

A focus is deliberately smaller. Not get healthy, but move your body four times a week this season. Not be more productive, but protect two hours each morning for the project that matters most right now. You can hold something that specific in your head. You can also tell whether you are actually doing it.

And then, importantly, it ends.

A seasonal focus gets twelve weeks or so. At the end, you stop and look at what happened. You can keep going, adjust it, or decide that it has done what you needed it to do and choose something else.

I think that stopping point is part of why this works for me. What I am working on right now does not have to become a permanent statement about the kind of person I am. It is simply where I have decided to put more of my attention for this season.

There is another advantage to choosing this way. The focus has to fit inside the life you are actually living.

Some seasons have room for a lot. Others come with travel, illness, demanding stretches at work, family responsibilities, or just less energy than you expected to have. Whatever you choose has to live alongside those things. Pretending they are not there does not create more room.

So the focus can change with the season.

Maybe this fall is a good time to take on something ambitious. Maybe it is the season when getting outside every day is enough. Either one can be the right focus if it fits what is actually going on.

A resolution asks you to become someone new by a date on the calendar.

A focus gives you somewhere to put your attention for a while.

I know which one I would rather live with.
