There is a version of owning less that becomes its own kind of noise.
The count of exactly how many items are in the closet. The photographs of the empty shelf. The explanation, offered whether or not anyone asked, of why the coffee table used to have four things on it and now has one. Somewhere along the way, having less stopped being a quiet fact about a home and started becoming a topic a person brings up.
This is worth noticing, because it undoes a lot of what owning less is actually supposed to give you.
The appeal of a simpler home was never the simplicity itself. It was what the simplicity made possible. Less to clean, less to manage, less visual noise competing for attention, more room to actually notice the things you kept because you wanted them there. None of that requires anyone else to know about it. A home with fewer things in it is not more successful because it has been documented. It is just a home that happens to have fewer things in it.
Somewhere the two got confused, and owning less turned into a kind of achievement to display rather than a condition to simply live inside of.
It can be surprisingly easy to turn a practical choice into something you want credit for. The closet gets smaller, and suddenly the number of things in it feels worth mentioning. The home gets simpler, and part of the satisfaction starts coming from being someone who has a simple home. At that point, it is worth wondering whether the simplicity is still doing what you wanted it to do.
There is nothing wrong with talking about any of this. I am writing about it, after all. Sharing what has worked can be interesting and can help someone else think differently about their own home. But there is a difference between talking about a choice and needing the choice to say something about you.
A better question might be: Would I still be doing this exact thing if no one ever knew?
If the answer is yes, it is probably just how you live. If the answer is genuinely no, it might be worth asking what the habit is actually for.
Owning less is supposed to make a life quieter. It is not supposed to become the loudest thing about it.
