Waiting for the Number to Move

There is a particular kind of impatience that comes with watching a net worth number creep toward a milestone.

Not the dramatic kind. Nobody is losing sleep over it. It is more like checking the mailbox for a package that is still three days out. You know exactly when it will arrive. Checking again does not speed anything up. And yet there you are, logging into an account you checked two days ago, hoping the number has somehow moved more than it logically could have.

I have a number in mind right now. I am not going to say what it is, partly because it is not really the point and partly because numbers like this only mean something in the context of an entire life nobody else is living. But I still look more often than I need to.

What is interesting is not the checking itself. It is what the checking reveals.

Mostly it reveals that I want the number to mean something it cannot actually deliver on its own. There is a version of this where hitting the milestone feels like crossing a finish line, where something will shift the moment the number appears. But milestones are mostly arbitrary. The day before you reach one and the day after look almost identical. The difference exists on a screen, not in your actual life.

Knowing this does not stop the checking. It just changes what I think about while I am doing it.

The waiting is doing more than I give it credit for, even if it does not always feel that way. Watching a number grow slowly, over months and years rather than days, builds a kind of patience that is genuinely hard to come by otherwise. You learn to trust a process that does not show its results quickly. You learn the difference between a milestone and a finish line: a finish line ends something, while a milestone is simply a marker along a road that keeps going.

I am still going to check the account more often than is strictly necessary. That seems like a permanent feature of having a goal rather than something to fix. But I am trying to hold the number a little more loosely. To notice the waiting as part of the process rather than an obstacle standing between me and the actual point.

The number will move when it moves. In the meantime, there is a whole life happening alongside the waiting, and that part deserves some attention too.
